The Gifts of the Child Christ MacDonald's first draft was for a play entitled If I had a Father. Failing to find a publisher he reworked it in The Gifts of the Child Christ and Ofher Stories which was published in 1882. As a Christmas tale it has proved to be a perennial favourite with his readers.
